Happy Birthday to My Favorite Republican (Abraham Lincoln)

Happy birthday to my favorite Republican!

Abraham Lincoln
12 February 1809 to 15 April 1865

Without him, the southeastern part of the United States might be a separate country called the Confederacy.  Africans might still be kept in slavery there.  And George W. Bush, being from Texas, would never be a United States citizen.  I can't help but wonder if, as President of the southern Confederacy, Bush might have continued to hold slaves, using them as free labor in his oil "plantations," while waging a war against what he insisted was an imminent threat to "freedom," we pesky abolitionist liberals of the northern United States.

But on a serious note, I've added a couple of Mr. Lincoln's most famous and most powerful speeches to my new Crisis Chronicles online library in celebration of this giant of a man's birthday.  Click here to read them.  And you might also want to visit Wikipedia's biography of our sixteenth U.S. President by clicking here.

While there really is no comparison between Honest Abe and Georgie Boy, my feeling is that Bush absolutely would have held slaves. Not just black slaves. Any "migrant" picked up that could do the work he needed. Back then, it wouldn't have mattered as much HOW they were labeled. Call 'em as ya like!! Happy Birthday, Abe!! We didn't know ye, but ye couldn't have been all that bad!!!!!!

lol... Of course we can only speculate, but I think your assessment of a Confederate Bush is totally plausible.
Upon further reflection, I wonder... if not for the Civil War or the conclusive Union victory there (both of which might not have happened without Abe), we might have been engaged in future wars with the south.  And whose side would the South have taken in World War I or II?  If she'd joined the Axis, Hitler might have won - and Germany might have won the atomic arms race.  There might be no UK or France today - Japan might have finished conquering China - and what would have happened to the USA?  Not to mention the fact that during World War II, India and Pakistan were part of the British Empire (Palestine, too, I believe).  What if Hitler had won?  Highly unlikely there would be a nation of Israel today....
The whole world would be different if Abraham Lincoln had never been our 16th President.

Abe is a popular fellow all around, but especially here in Illinois. You should come to the new Lincoln Library in Springfield. From what I've heard it's quite a tribute.
    Peace.

Thanks, Adriane!  I definitely want to visit Springfield.  I've never been to Illinois and there's so much I want to see there, especially the Lincoln sites.  He might not have been perfect (who is?), but in several ways he was our greatest (and in the history of the world, most important) President.  Just driving on the Lincoln Highway here in Ohio, I was in awe....
I appreciate your comment, my friend.  Peace....

True... there are exceptions to every rule....
One more observation: in today's TV image age, Abe's "ugly" mug might turn voters off, it's sad to say, and prevent him from ever being elected.  Damn shame....

Abe was self taught, born in a rustic cabin, never had to raise millions of dollars to run his "campaign" or travel from one state to the other. What changes from his time to ours! He saved the union but we are still fighting the bigotry of racism. We shall overcome one day...perhaps in this election where
finally a woman and a black man are the main contestants in the primaries for the Democrats. May the best one win!!

I'd be relatively happy with either Hillary or Obama - especially when you compare them to their Republican counterparts.
I think TV has, paradoxically made people more receptive to a female or black commander in chief.  What was that show where Geena Davis played a very good U.S. President?  And then on Fox's show 24, Wayne Palmer and his brother were both extremely competent black Presidents.

I tried to think of a cool Abe song other than the obvious "Abraham, Martin and John."  The only one that comes to mind is "Hot Rod Lincoln" ... lol
