Help These Victims of "Justice" System Injustice
My friend Roxanne, a Buddhist and devoted prison reformer, has asked me to post this information about some incarcerated men who are in great need of assistance. Some have been incarcerated unjustly, some denied medical care, some kept in prison long after they've paid their debt to society, and some even tortured....
One of these men is her cousin Leonard Peltier, the Native American activist who has been unjustly imprisoned since the 1970's.

Have you read The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town by John Grisham yet? I picked it up thinking it would be a nice murder mystery to read at the gym while doing my cardio. I like light reads for that. I'm about 1/2 way through the book thinking, this is too far fetched. I went home and looked up the description of the book and was shocked to find out it was true. I thought it was too far fetched for fiction! In the book, the main character Ron Williamson spends years on death row after being framed for a murder he knew nothing about.
I lived in Illinois when they stopped all executions and I was never prouder of my government.
I will write my Senator about this issue. Unfortunately I live in Florida and I think our prisoners have less of a chance than most.

Truth is stranger than fiction, as they say.... If a novel had been written about my story before it happened to me, I would have called it totally implausible and unbelievable. But sadly, these things do happen - and all-too-frequently.
I have a copy of Grisham's The Innocent Man in my library, but I haven't read it yet. Believe it or not, it's hard for me to read such stories. They make me relive it. So most of the books I've read about such cases, I read in prison or before prison. Now I can make myself read an article - but I'm not ready for a whole book yet. Too much to relive... though I suspect I will read it eventually after more time has passed, because I believe it's important to be educated about such cases, and I've heard good things about the book.
I applaud Illinois for issuing that moratorium!
And I greatly appreciate your comment and your offer to write your senator. Thank you, Kelly!

I think one of our gringo friends here got in trouble with Peltier.

Too bad Peltier didn't have a chance to skedaddle to Mexico.... I wonder if they would have extradicted him back to Los Estados Unidos.

If bill C would have taken his head out of his ass long enought to take monicas head off of his lap then he might have dont some good at the end of his term like legalize, or even better use his presidential pardon to free Leonard, Its a matter ive cared about for some time, Unfortunatly george is a racist and an idiot on top of that, so we will have to wait EVEN LONGER!!!!
Peace out Munchie

You're right: Bill should have done it and George doesn't seem to care. So much for his so-called "compassionate conservatism"!
Thanks for your comment, bro!

I agree!!
I have written many letters trying to get Peltier set free! I think he has been done very wrong!

You are a very kind and good person.
I find it strange that America is so swift to demand for other nations and other leaders (Saddam Hussein comes to mind) to atone for their "sins" and atrocities, when America has never been too interested in atoning for its own, especially against the Native Americans and the slaves from Africa.
Land of the free? Depends on who you ask....

I just finished innocent man 15 min. ago,and I am glad to live in Canada with no death penalty. I just cannot understand the death penalty. Death is the absolute final thing, all we really have is life. I can not understand how one person or group of people can consider taking a life, if only they could wear a death row pair of shoes and feel the horror and finality of the coming date,I cannot see how they could not change their mind.
Years ago I thought the death penalty was the right thing. I think I thought this from ingnorance and media cramming these thoughts in my head. When all you do is work with very little down time to read and think outside "normal ways," you sometimes just follow the pack.
I never have seen much up here in Canada about criminal rights but that is probably becauce I have not been looking. I am looking now.

Excellent observations....
I have to admit that once upon a time I believed in the death penalty as well. The older I get - and the more I see, read, and experience - I am appalled by capital punishment. And I'm amazed by this irony: that most of the biggest believers in the death penalty here in America happen to also be staunch so-called "pro-lifers" when it comes to abortion.
There were folks in the Bible who believed in the death penalty - and if I recall correctly, Jesus told them "Judge not" and "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
I appreciate you stopping by my blog and sharing your thoughts, Brian!
