Snapshot 1979: Jesus Crisis Goes to Funkytown?
So here's today's story... from January 1979.
I hope my mom and brother don't disown me for posting it... lol.

Perhaps a more fitting quotation comes from a 1979 song by Lipps, Inc.
"Won't you take me to Funkytown?"

.....even funnier??? ...i LOVE the song funky town!!!!!!! ...sshhhhh... don't TELL anybody, k?

Your secret's safe with me - 'cause I have to admit I kinda dig it too.

Oh. My. God. The Minister may have to put "Funkytown" on the Church's profile.
How he's going to explain it, he doesn't know. But somehow, it belongs there....

Think of Funkytown as a surreal sort of stopping point between purgatory and heaven. "In my Father's house there are many mansions, some with disco balls and jukeboxes full of one-hit wonders. If it were not so, I would not have told you so. Behold I will come again in the clouds, full of glory, to reclaim all sorts of BeeGees, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, and other seventies records." I think I had a dream along those lines many, many years ago. Might make for a Gaudy (as opposed to God-dy?) kingdom, though... lol.

That song was my "coming out" song! I went to my first gay bar in 1977 and this was a hit.I shook my booty many, many times to it!
Reply to this
You look far too young for "Funkytown" to be your coming out song! The first time I stepped foot in a gay bar, the biggest song was probably Madonna's "Vogue" - but they were still playing all the old school stuff like "Funkytown," Donna Summer, the Village People, and "It's Raining Men" as well... lol.

Thanks!!! Just genetics,. Baby face!
You have one too. You look very young and have great hair. I do too but I have had it buzzed for a couple years and I love it! So damn easy!
Reply to this
I've had my hair buzzed twice as an adult - entering the Marine Corps and entering prison. Now I get anxious at even the thought of it... ha!
I'm not traumatized by the buzz cuts of others, however.
Reply to this
i love the buzzing sound of those clippers.
Reply to this
Does it give you a buzz?
Reply to this
*laughing* actually, it does buzzzzz me. i love having my hair really short.

You have officially been disowned, haha. Goodness, I looked downright awful. Mom

Even though that's one of the most horrible pictures of us (and Mike insisted on making silly faces through the whole session), you, dear Mama, were still beautiful!

Women with RED hair rule. That is what makes you beautiful.. this coming from another redhead.

Wow, wow...wu..uh..ow. Mesmerizing! I smell a Milli Vinilli here...c'mon, dance moves like that and mystical vocal stylizing too? I was deep in the punk rock scene when this came out and missed it. I am now forever changed. Its has its own Wiki??? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funkytown
Reply to this
LOL... I was 12 at the time and led a somewhat sheltered existence - so I didn't even hear of punk until after that, as amazing as it seems (even to me). In 1980, my cousin Debbie gave me the Clash's London Calling, and I began to discover (as Paul Harvey would say) "the rest of the story."
I don't want to traumatize you any further... lol... but the song also has its own interactive website: www.funkytown.com.

From haiku to funky town all in one day?
1979? I traveled from Portugal, to Spain, Italy, Greece and Israel that spring. Do you have baby pictures also? What's the next blog?
Reply to this
Think of the cuckoo from my last blog as a foreshadowing of this one... lol.
I do have baby pictures... all in good time.
And I have no idea what the next blog will be.
I have a few in partially-complete states, but I haven't had sufficient time/interest or been in the right mood to finish them:
The rest of my Bill Clinton rally photos and video
Tibetan nuns
The WTF Art Identification challenge results
Spotlight on guitarist and songwriter Steve Earle
How Al Gore can STILL be the Democratic nominee in 2008
Scenes from our visit to James Garfield's home in Mentor last week
My MySpace friend Don interviewed me (I need to answer his questions)
I'll probably tackle one of those on the next rainy day... or as soon as tonight.
Or something else may come up in the meantime.
I've also been seriously considering focusing on poetry for the rest of this April, since it IS National poetry Month. Kerouac, Ferlinghetti, and a video of me reading either my own or my favorite poetry are all possibilities in the forefront of my mind.
Sometimes I have no idea what I'm going to do until I do it....

Wow. The poignancy of photographs. We can time travel.

Ain't that the truth?
For some reason, I'm reminded of that Rocky Horror Picture Show song: "Let's do the time warp again...."

lol... thanks, Shyloh!
In a related sidenote: the Olan Mills studio where that photograph was taken was also the site of my second real job, as a telephone portrait package salesman for a couple of weeks in early 1985 (at the age of 18). I was a terrible salesman, however - and Mom was the only person who made a purchase from me.

oh my. Your Mom looks like Laura Bush! *wincing from being slapped by your Mom* But beautiful, nonetheless.

you cannot post pictures yourself on this blog, only the url's. john can take the url and turn it into a picture, because, of course, he's john.

LOL... I could, but the URL says the photo's been deleted.
Here's how it might work for you: Click and drag to highlight a photo on the internet. Hold down the ctrl button and hit C to copy. Then go to the comment you're writing and press ctrl-V to paste the image into the comment. his might work, though the HTML code does not.

i've just tried this and keep getting test, no matter what i do. i've downloaded and uploaded, viewed the image, whatever. every time i get text that would not be a picture.
