George Carlin: "Religion Is Bullshit"

George Carlin: 1937 - 2008 and beyond
George Carlin, one of my heroes since I read his book Braindroppings in prison in the mid-nineties, died Sunday June 22nd at age 71. What better way to celebrate his life than by watching and listening to him at work? My previous blog posed the question "What if war were a woman?" One the questions George Carlin addresses here is whether God could be a woman.
Anyway, this is about ten minutes long and worth every second:
A lot more George Carlin is available through my Amazon bookstore:

I just watched this video last night. George was a legend. He said some funny stuff, but I think he had an eye for what was real. He was so philosophical, and he recognized the humor and the absurdity in people and everything. I almost always agreed with him on every topic because it was humor based in truth. He said it like he saw it. I admire that. He will be missed.

I agree entirely, Susan. Even if I didn't personally agree with everything he ever said (though I did quite a bit), you're right: "he said it like he saw it." And he was all about keeping it real. There aren't a lot of 100% honest "celebrities" (or people, period) out there... but George Carlin's always struck me as someone who tried his damnedest to be 100% honest. That's heroic!

Don't argue with atheists. Just tell them and all other argumentative atheists the following: "Hey, I don't believe in the God you don't believe in either." ROFL

Rest in peace, my favorite funny, self-emasculating victim.
"The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't." ~George Carlin

I personally wasn't slowed down by what Carlin said, but I've heard dozens of people quote him as if he were some kind of prophet telling us to stop trying because there's nothing we can do. Maybe now that he's gone, we can stop the pity party and get to work.

I agree 100% with what Susan said. I love George Carlin because he had a brilliant way of putting ideas together. He had a serious message that he delivered in a very clever and very funny way. I'm a Catholic and I do believe in God, but I completely agree that there is no all powerful supreme being that is watching us every moment and controlling everything. God gave us free will which is, by definition, the power to control everything to the extent that anything can be controlled. I don't believe that God has the power to prevent all of the suffering in the world. We do have that power and we don't do it. I think that people rely on God too heavily when they use their beliefs to avoid personal responsibility. I pray to God for strength and wisdom. I fully expect that I will have to do the work to achieve my goals. I don't believe that it is necessary to believe in God to be a good person. You can see that my God is not the God that the majority are worshiping.

That's not the message I got from watching that.

We enjoyed this lots. Thanks for posting.
Smith sez there're three comedians: Groucho Marx, Lenny Bruce and George Carlin. That's the Holy Trinity.

You can only really spoof things well that you take seriously...
Comedians like Carlin have a way of pointing out truth in an interesting way...
Thank for taking the time to remember him...

I think that Jerry Seinfeld said it best in his tribute that appeared in today's New York Times:
"His performing voice, even laced with profanity, always sounded as if he were trying to amuse a child. It was like the naughtiest, most fun grown-up you ever met was reading you a bedtime story."

as my wife Shady Lady K mentioned in her comment, there's 3 comedians i respect: groucho marx, lenny bruce, george carlin. i used to respect robin williams before he went hallmark gooey on us.
as for live stand-up comedians, there's only bruce and carlin.

God is neither a Man nor Women. God is Androgynous. Male /female are aspects of duality, and duality only goes up to the 5th dimension; it begins to fade thereafter.
I enjoyed this video immensely. It was very funny. It proves how religious bodies have not done a good job of explaining things to the masses; maybe because they hardly understood it themselves. The problem with existing in duality is that we think in terms of 'This or That' - ' Good or Bad'- 'Right or Wrong'. To understand how things could really be, we must learn to think out side the box, beyond duality.
