Happy birthday, Roger Waters!

Roger Waters

I'd like to wish a happy birthday to a guy who was for a long time my favorite songwriter.  And he still is one of my favorites.  You probably know him best from his role as bassist, co-vocalist and creative guru of the band Pink Floyd.  Masterpieces like The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and The Final Cut were just a few of his brilliant brainchildren.  He also put out some excellent solo discs, including The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and Amused to Death.  He even composed a surprisingly good classical-style opera (entitled Ça Ira) about the French Revolution.

Anyway, happy birthday to Roger Waters!

Here are three You Tube videos of Roger's work:

"Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd, from The Wall (1980, starring Bob Geldof as "Pink"):

"What God Wants (Part Two)" by Roger Waters from Amused to Death (1992):

"Wish You Were Here" performed by Roger Waters and Eric Clapton (for Tsunami Aid):

Awesome.. Never knew about the opera or the solo albums.. but I don't follow Pink Floyd as closely as you do.
Is there a version of the opera out anywhere? Just curious...

    Thanks for the post...

    Long live the Floyd...

Have you ever heard any of the stuff they did with Sid Barrett? I understand that virtually everything from "Dark Side of the Moon" to "Wish You Were Here" to "The Wall" was about Roger missing Sid.

I want them to play "Wish You Were Here" at my funeral!

Happy b-day, Roger, I hope you never stop writing music and lyrics...

You might know from my profile page and a blog I wrote on my finding the light of Picnk Floyd's music. I was upset when he left the band and later tried to keep the remaining members from playing music which he wrote. It has been settledm but it has left a bitter feeling in my thoughts. I love all three phases of Pink Floyd, but I long to see hi, reunited with his former band mates on a new album and a new world tour. It is unfortunate that Syd Barrett has never fully recovered. He has had a few albums produced by members of Pink Floyd, but the music id stuck in the Acid rock sounds of the late sixties, and has a somewhat childish undertones. Still a good listen, if you leave the time warp behind. Thank you for this blog and clips.

Pink Floyd has been recording for ages and I am trying to remember when they hit their peak of popularity.

pink floyd is the one group who appeals to all ages. they were part of my late 60s soundtrack, part of my 11 year younger brother's, and my 27 year younger wife.
