Palin Is Ready? Please.

[One of my favorite columnists - always astute and as close as humanly possible to fair and balanced - is Newsweek magazine's Fareed Zakaria.  I first stumbled upon his work in the wake of 9/11, about seven years ago, and I've been an avid reader since.   Here's an excellent piece he wrote for the 6 October 2008 issue.]

Palin Is Ready?  Please.
by Fareed Zakaria

McCain says that he always puts country first. In this important case, that is simply not true.

Will someone please put Sarah Palin out of her agony? Is it too much to ask that she come....

I haven't been reading much of this stuff lately - I know enough about McCain & Palin to know they are incredibly bad choices. My wish for mental health requires I keep my passion out of the election! Plan to go back to reading more news after the election's over.

The news is wearing me out lately.  But I'm always afraid I'll miss something.  I, too, am looking forward to this election being over.   And I heartily agree with you about McCain and Palin.  Thanks for your comment.

I wish I could stop watching all of it, but I can't help myself. This is my sport. The debates are my playoffs and the election is my superbowl.

It took me a while to figure out why McCain chose Palin. He certainly could have chosen a informed person, someone conversant in the relevant issues. She's proven that she doesn't know or care about current events. She can't name a single newspaper she reads. I think he chose her to speak to the religious right. She's mastered the topics of the Bible, creationism, pro-life and she can argue with confidence that the evidence is not in to decide that global warming is anything other than God's will. She cannot say if humans contributed to that. So McCain can correct a supporter in his audience and say, No, Obama's not a Muslim and he's an American and a family man, because at the same moment he's doing that, Sara Palin is arguing that Obama's a terrorist and an associate of terrorists. A couple of days ago the New York Times ran an editorial called "The Politics Of Attack." According to the article, Palin's speeches are so divisive that at one speech a supporter called out "kill him" in reference to Obama, and a black cameraman got some abuse from the crowd also. McCain's choice of Sara Palin was very clever. I hope that people see through it and hold him accountable for what she is saying on his behalf.
