Ice Ice Baby

Just got back from North Olmsted....  Between two red lights on State Route 57 (at Chestnut Ridge Road and at Broad Street in Elyria), we passed 42 vehicles (including a semi truck) that were off the road and/or damaged as a result of the ice.  Lotsa cop cars and maybe half a dozen ambulances were on hand - and it took us close to an hour to get through that mile-or-two-long stretch of highway.  I hear there have been lotsa accidents elsewhere as well.

Just when I was feeling sucky about the holiday season, I'm reminded that there is much to be grateful for, especially life.

Wishing you health, wisdom and the best kind of wealth (it isn't always monetary) this holiday season,
John

James and I were out, too... we were on I90, and the roads were terrible! As JC has written, there are lots of police-fire-ambulance vehicles everywhere. Traffic is backed up. The stores must think these are their tribulations of Job, what with the weather, the depressed economy, the car-industry layoffs.... I'm going no farther than Aunt Helen's, and maybe the movies, tomorrow!

Pulling into our steep downhill driveway with the Explorer, I had trouble stopping - thought for a second I was going to slide into my Mustang.  Then Mom called, said my niece told her there was a 20-car accident down the street from me, on the corner of Cleveland and 57.  Might explain why I heard all those sirens....

Glad you and James are safe!

I'm glad you made it home safely yesterday since the roads out younar way were so damn treacherous. I remember last winter when you couldn't get your car out of the steep, slippery ice covered driveway. Either get a lot of salt and cinders this winter or park across the street at the parking lot. That's just a suggestion. Today it is raining and slushy here and the ice is now melting. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christ Mess.. lol

I'm doing my best to keep Christ in Christmas, which is a challenge with a Jewish Husband and Jewish Daughter. I'm sharing with them that Jesus was a scholar, teacher and prophet. We are not discussing whether He is the Son of God. We just agree to disagree on that one.

My heart goes out to all the people who have been injured this holiday season. Having worked in personal injury, I have seen the sorrow that a serious accident brings into a person's life.

Glad you and yours are all safe and sound!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All!

Thank you, Tara.  Hope your family has had a happy Hanukkah and Christmas!

One way to get around the "son of God" issue....  remember that the earliest known Greek New Testament manuscripts used all capital letters.  The same spelling of "SON" was used for Jesus as "SON OF GOD" and John as "SON OF ZEBEDEE."  The New Testament also calls more than Jesus "Sons of God" (the Greek word includes all children, and can be translated "Sons and Daughters of God")  Sure, John calls Jesus "the only begotten son."  But elsewhere the New Testament says "As many as recieved him [God?], to them he gave the right to be called the Sons [and daughters?] of God."  Jesus even quotes a verse from the Old Testament (one of the Psalms, I believe) that says "Ye [all people? all believers in God? all Jews?] are Gods."  Wish  could remember where that is off hand.  So in a sense, even the Old Testament calls more than just Jesus "Gods" or "Sons of God" (a "Son of Man" is a man, so why couldn't a Son of God" be a God?).  Hebrew (the language of the OT) doesn't even have capital letters.  So you could say our English capitals are a later addition and even superfluous.

Thank you for the excellent explanation, John. I am sure I will employ it often. I am reading a book by the attorney, Alan Dershowitz, called "The Genesis of Justice" in which Dershowitz asserts that the Bible is not a historical text, but, rather, a sacred text and should be studied and considered as such. I also recall from my Catholic School years that the closest Jesus never called himself the "Son of God" other than to say, "I am going about my Father's work" when he was found in the temple after being lost for days. It seems that the only bone of contention between Judaism and Catholicism is whether or not the birth of Jesus is the fulfillment of the old convenant with the Jews and if indeed he represents the new and everlasting convenant. Maybe this is why Catholics and Jews are so often intermarrying without much difficulty.
