Lix & Kix moves to Wednesday - plus Donuts, Gays & my return to Marion

poster by Dianne Borsenik

THIS JUST IN: Effective immediately, the Lix and Kix poetry series Dianne Borsenik and I host at Bela Dubby in Lakewood is moving to the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  Tuesday was never our preferred day - we only took it in the first place because that was the only day our first venue, the 806 in Tremont, would give us their space - and we only kept it because we figured people were already used to our having Lix and Kix on a Tuesday.  But I've been itching to change the day for some time now - largely because there are two other very worthy poetry events that happen around Cleveland on the 3rd Tuesday of each month: the Nia Coffeehouse at the Coventry Village Library and (during the school year, at least) the CSU Poetry Center's longstanding reading series.   Moving to the 3rd Wednesday allows us to complement and support these other fine venues instead of competing with them.  And this makes me happy.

Here are a few upcoming happenings I hope you'll check out:

Thursday 11 February 2010 at 7 p.m.John Burroughs will be featured poet at Dunkin' Donuts on State Rt. 303 in Brunswick, Ohio, hosted by the Brunswick Art Works.  An open mic will follow.

Wednesday 17 February 2010 at 7 p.m.J.E. Stanley (co-author, with Joshua Gage, of the newly released Intrinsic Night, from Sam's Dot Press), Jack McGuane (Poet Laureate of Lakewood and author of Sleeping with My Socks, from deep cleveland press), and Roger Craik (author of the just published Of England Still, from Finishing Line Press) will be featured poets during the Lix and Kix poetry extravaganza at Bela Dubby, 13321 Madison Ave. in Lakewood, Ohio.  An open mic will follow.

Wednesday 17 March 2010 at 7 p.m. — The 2nd annual Lix and Kix St. Patrick's Day extravaganza will feature Trenchcoat Manifesto (poetry and music by Tom Adams and Richard Hearn), Michigan performance poet Zach Ashley, and Cleveland Heights' very own Sammy Greenspan (author of Step Back from the Closing Doors, from Pudding House Publications) at Bela Dubby, 13321 Madison Ave. in Lakewood, Ohio.  An open mic will follow.

Saturday 27 March 2010 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. —  The 2nd annual Feed the Gays benefit for the Cleveland State University GLASA (Gay, Lesbian And Straight Alliance) scholarship fund will feature an art show and an eclectic array of poetic and musical performers including Steven B. Smith, Lady K, Dianne Borsenik, John "Jesus Crisis" Burroughs, 10-string guitarist JJ Haaz, and many more at the Bounce Night Club & Union Station Cafe located at 2814 Detroit Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio.

Friday 2 April 2010 at 6:30 p.m.Dianne Borsenik and John Burroughs will be featured performers during the Ohio Poetry Association's poetry & music series at the New Beginnings Cafe, 141 East Center Street in Marion, Ohio.  An open mic will follow.

Oh, and I've uploaded about 300 of my photos from Snoetry: A Winter Wordfest (which Dianne and I co-hosted on 16 January at the Last Wordsmith Book Shoppe in North East, PA) to my Facebook profile, in case you're interested in having a look.

Peace and poetry,
John

Yes, there are far, far too many events occurring on the same days as other events. I can't think of any others on the third Wednesday, so you should be free and clear. Just don't schedule any more events on a third Saturday, ya hear? LOL

I swear I wasn't the one who pizza'd your car!

I still feel like shit for unwittingly scheduling Snoetry on the same day as your gig -- especially annoying to me since I'm one who's complained loudly about other people thoughtlessly scheduling poetry events at the same exact time another in the area is happening.

I thought Saturday was the best day to get most of the out of towners.  The bookstore pretty much offered us any Saturday - and I thought the choice of the 3rd Sat. was a slam dunk for several reasons. I didn't pick the first Sat. because it was right after New Year's and we wouldn't yet have had a post-Xmas paycheck with which to pay for a hotel room in PA.  I didn't pick the 2nd or 4th Sat. because I thought those were the weekends Geri worked (she wanted to go) and the 2nd Sat. was the day of our monthly Pudding House Salon in Cleveland Heights.  Plus the Brandt Gallery holds its monthly readings on the 2nd Saturday - and in a temporary lapse of brain function I was thinking the Poets Haven did, too.

Turns out I was wrong about the Poets Haven, Pudding House took a hiatus for the month of January anyway, and I had screwed up Geri's weekends (she was to be off the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, not the 3rd, and she wasn't happy about having to "waste" her vacation time on a poetry event).  Worrying about Geri's schedule later became moot for two reasons: (1) her schedule changed in December and she ended up being off the 3rd Sat. after all, and (2) she didn't even go to Snoetry because she got sick the day before.  Also, we didn't need the post-Xmas paycheck after all, since I ended up driving home after the event instead of staying at a hotel.

No more 3rd Saturday events besides the Poets Haven!

The last time I looked.. earlier today.. they still had you guys listed for Tuesday on the CP event runner. You may want to have that changed if you haven't already done so...

I wanted to change the day before we continued -- but I knew Bela Dubby had a lot of other stuff going on and didn't know if we could pull it off without without changing venues (and I didn't want to go through that  again).  Dianne talked to them and it turned out changing to Wednesday was no problem after all....

I also wanted to make more time to finish writing my book in 2010 (a resolution I made to myself) -- but decided freeing up one day a month (maybe three, if you count the preparation) by canceling Lix and Kix wasn't the most efficient or otherwise reasonable means to that end.  I'm making other changes instead -- more personal ones.

There were also Clevelanders we still wanted to feature (e.g. McGuane and Stanley, Salinger and Holbrook) and out of towners we wanted to bring to Cleveland (e.g Zach Ashley and some other folks whose names I'm not yet at liberty to disclose).

Plus the success of Snoetry seems to have revitalized the part of me that enjoys hosting these events -- so here we are.

John, thanks for following COEXIST. I'm quite honored! We met at a Lit event but I'm not much of a joiner. I read about all your events and they sound amazing. I live in Solon and work in Cleveland Heights and rarely want to travel back there, but hopefully someday we'll meet again.
