Bother Abraham
I also find the biblical Abraham story interesting. God told Abraham to kill his son — but then it turned out he didn't really want Abraham to do it. Does that make God a liar - or someone who tells us one thing he doesn't really want us to do in order to manipulate us into doing/being someone else? And why would he want us to be someone else if he made us this way? Methinks our myths are ways of trying to manipulate God and make him/her in our own image.

the point being that we are always being tested by life - you pass or fail or learn your WAY among the by-ways of life - or else - not many choices.

These are thoughts I've had for some time. This morning I was inspired to put them into words in response to Kathy Smith's interesting Facebook status:
*"God wants Abraham to build an ark," the dream said.*
I prefer her dream to the biblical account.

Then I think if God created heaven and earth he could build the fucking ark, too.

that's strange because last week dubblex and I were talking about this. I said all this maiming war and glory all about the bible and all they did was whore around and beget, fuck their fathers and kill their brothers and XX laughed and said well that's why they destroyed them all and only saved a few of each then. And I said the fucking ark? And he happily nodded. Maybe there's something to these last days - the earth can't support our sorry asses much longer all we do to hurt her.

Bother Abraham
Father Abraham
had many sons. His daughters,
too, deserve a song.

I think the thing about the Abraham story that is interesting is it is supposed to be about faith and trust. And about sacrificing something dear to you for something greater than yourself.
But ironically the story, for me, doesn't accomplish that.
It portrays God as a trickster who feels he has to pose puzzles and play games with people to determine their loyalty.
If he is as all knowing and as all powerful as portrayed he wouldn't need to do that. As you said. He would all ready know.
That is why I don't believe in a personal, literal god.

yes I agree Chris that is what it is supposed to be about but it doesn't quite do it for me either.
