New Poetry Series at Avon Lake Public Library

Beginning in January, under the auspices of Poets of Lorain County, I will hosting a new poetry series on the third Thursday of each month from 7 to 8:30 at the Avon Lake Public Library, 32649 Electric Blvd. in Avon Lake, Ohio.  We're on the schedule for five months so far — and if things go well, perhaps we'll get to continue beyond that.

The featured writers we have scheduled so far include at least one Lorain County poet per month:

January 20th 2011 — John Burroughs and Robert Miltner
February 17th — Dianne Borsenik and Terry Provost
March 17th — Heather Ann Schmidt and Eric Anderson
April 21st — Lou Suarez and Susan Grimm
May 19th — Sammy Greenspan and Kazim Ali

I've created new Poets of Lorain County pages both here at Crisis Chronicles and on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/loraincountypoets. I'll try to keep both updated regularly.

Ha!  Indeed....  Plus I have featured readings scheduled in January (south of Mansfield), March (Erie, PA) and May (Athens, OH).  And the Lorain Arts Council is now interested in having us host a reading in downtown Lorain - and I'm planning the next Snoetry - which I'm hoping to turn into a 150-hour thing to set a new record for longest poetry reading ever.

But besides all that, I never intended to host six readings a month.  Three months ago when I began planning the Avon Lake series, I was only committed to Lix through December 2010 and wasn't sure if I'd continue.  At that time, Jim's (under old ownership) was going out of business and no place in Elyria seemed like a good option.  But I'd been wanting to host a reading closer to home, so I sent out feelers to Cindy Maxey, who was a librarian at Avon Lake, not expecting anything to come from it.  But she was very interested and we quickly put this together.  Strangely, soon after we set it up, Cindy left her job at Avon Lake and took a position elsewhere - so it was a matter of perfect timing - otherwise it might not have happened.  So all I was committed to in the new year at that point was Avon Lake.  But having another venue where I could do something different helped recharge my interest in Lix - and there were other folk we wanted to feature for Lix who were starting to say yes they were ready to read for us - and we discovered Lix and Kix are gonna be featured in the next issue of Rosebud magazine - so we started scheduling more features for Lix.  This was October, and I was then committed to two readings a month in 2011, still never expecting to do anything in Elyria any time soon.  Then I found out my old acquaintance had acquired and was reopening Jim's and was eager to have a poetry event - and I knew he wouldn't censor us like the old ownership would have.  And I wanted to help him (and the local business) to succeed.  So I met with him to discuss hosting a monthly evening reading.  But he was eager to do something weekly - and I could only do that on a Sunday - but Sunday was good for him - so suddenly I was committed to hosting six readings a month.  And I might not have pursued Avon Lake if Jim's had opened earlier - but I'm glad I did and that things unfolded this way.  Maybe Jim's will only be open six months.  Maybe the Avon Lake series will only last five.  I figure by the time May comes I'll have a better idea of how things are gonna unfold, and then I'll settle on one reading - or at most two - if I survive that long.
